One Major Warning Sign of a Dishonest Contractor

After the hail storms that hit Blaine, Coon Rapids and Hugo, the area is inundated with contractors and door knockers hoping to inspect your roof. While most of these sales reps are good people from good companies, there are always a few bad eggs mixed into the bunch. One large warning sign is a contractor who promises to cover your deductible for you outright, or to provide some sort of credit for your deductible as inducement to you to sign with them.

In 2010 and 2011, Minnesota passed legislature prohibiting contractors from offering to:

• cover the cost of or rebate any amount of a homeowner’s deductible

• offer a sign or other credit either before or after work is performed

• offer a free materials upgrade

• offer a gift card, free restaurant meal, or any other thing of value

Please keep this law in mind as you’re researching potential clients for your storm damage repair. A contractor who is willing to risk their business and reputation by breaking the law to cover your deductible may also be willing to take other shortcuts, such as using cheaper materials than they sold you, or performing shoddy installation.
