Meet the Team of Trinity Exteriors

Increasingly, homeowners are drawn to solar energy in an effort to reduce their energy costs and carbon footprint. Right now, Minneapolis homeowners interested in solar power typically install solar panels on their roofs to maximize the amount of sunlight their home gets throughout the year. Homeowners frequently ask us if solar power is as easy as getting some panels fastened onto the roof, and we suggest they look further into the prep work for this project. Here are some steps to take when considering solar.

Evaluate

Before delving into solar power, evaluate how much the initial investment will be, and what kind of savings you can expect from rebates or lower energy bills. Minnesota is one of the friendlier states in terms of promoting alternate energy, and despite the snow there is enough sunlight to capture with solar panels.

Research

There is more to a solar roof than installing panels. You may have to build a nook or storage cabinet for the battery, electrical inverters or Balance of System equipment. Where will the best location be for this? Will additional storage be unsightly?

Inspect

Solar panels go on the roof, most of the time. Because of this, you should get your roof inspected for possible repairs or replacements. If you have leaking or damaged shingles after your solar installation, the panels need to be dismantled and removed for crews to bring your roof to code. This can get expensive. Also make sure the trusses of your roof can support the weight of the panels, and that there aren’t any vents or other fixtures in the 200 square to 400 square foot space in which you plan to place the panels.

Other Options

If solar power still seems out of your reach, there are other cost-effective ways to improve the energy efficiency of your home, such as window wraps to prevent drafts, new windows that can save hundreds on your energy bills every year, or an insulation upgrade.
