Largest Hail Record Broken in South Dakota

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration reported in a press release on July 30, that the record for largest hail was broken in the July 23, 2010 storm in South Dakota. The hailstone, found by a Vivian, SD resident after the severe storm on July 23rd. The largest hail champion now measures in at 8.0 inches in diameter, with a circumference of 18.62 inches and weighing almost 2 pounds (1.94lbs). Not only did the giant hailstone triumph in weight, but also diameter. The largest hail previously holding the title for weight, weighed over a 1.67-pound and was recorded in Kansas 1970. The record breaking hailstone, also now reigns over a 7-inch hailstone found in Nebraska after a 2003 storm.
