The Joy of a Garden Window

Garden windows extend out from the house and have an interior shelf for plants and herbs. Side vents provide ventilation. When considering a garden window purchase, make sure the window can go where there is plenty of light (6 to 8 hours for some plant varieties) and where it won’t interfere with outside structures or walkways.
Garden windows are angled away from the house by a 90-degree angle and are sized most commonly at 72” x 48” differentiating it from bay windows that angle out at 25- or 30-degree angles that are custom-fit to larger sizes.
As for the plants to choose for your garden window, larger or deep-root plants will do better in an outside garden, but flowery plants can thrive inside. Think herbs such as oregano or basil, or small vegetables like radishes, beans, and even lettuce.
Homeowners with garden windows say they enjoy having a piece of summer with them year round, and in a state like Minnesota, we can definitely see how that’s a good thing!
