6 Ways to Save Money on Replacement Windows

#1 Talk with your contractor about what has to be replaced for certain, and what can wait. Sometimes, a storm window or window insert can make a world of difference in your energy savings. Or, if you don't mind starting and stopping a project, replace a few windows at a time each year.

#2 Window replacements can be tax deductible. Depending on the type of window you purchase, you can deduct 10% of the cost (up to $200) for your taxes (check with your accountant for sure on this one, please!).

#3 Include your energy savings. New windows can save you between $100 and $600 a year in energy costs, over 10 years, you’ve more than paid for your window investment investment.

#4 Count the resale value of your home. New windows are a huge draw for buyers, and you can easily recoup your cost, particularly on the current Minneapolis housing market.

#5 Are you near an airport? Funds are allocated for houses within flight patterns to upgrade to noise mitigation windows. If you think you qualify, you should absolutely take advantage of these opportunities.

#6 Take advantage of specials and sales. Spring is a great time for contractors to offer special sales. Shop around for a deal you like, but also research the company to ensure you’re signing on with a local, reputable contractor who will back warranties and be on-hand for any problems that may arise in the future.
