Meet the Team of Trinity Exteriors

Working on any part of your home is a huge investment and replacing or repairing your roof is no different. You want to be sure your next roofing project goes smoothly, but problems can occur down the road that may be out of your realm of control.

Warranties provide you peace of mind knowing that if anything goes wrong with your new roof, you’ll be able to fix the problem at little to no cost to you.

Do you know what roofing warranties all cover, though? Before you get your roof replaced, it’s best to know what you’re getting with your roofing warranty.

How Long Do Warranties Last?

Warranty length for roofing generally coincides with the type of roof you decided to install. Asphalt shingles and metal roofing have up to a 25-year warranty on average, while cedar shake roofing may have a shorter one due to its high maintenance.

Some companies, however, will offer a 50-year limited warranty, so it’s best to do your research to find the best fit for you!

Workmanship Warranty

A workmanship warranty will cover anything that might go wrong during the initial installation process that will need repair or replacement. This protects you from any shotty or lazy workmanship done by a roofing contractor.

Of course, researching the company's work before hiring is always recommended! A contractor’s warranty is only as good as how it’s written, so you must read it thoroughly before agreeing to the work being done.

A workmanship warranty can last from 2, 5, 10, or 25 years, while some companies offer a lifetime warranty. A trick of the trade is to notice how long their workmanship warranty lasts. The shorter the time frame, the less confident the roofing contractor may feel about their work.

Manufacturer Warranty

A manufacturer’s warranty falls on the company that made the roofing materials.

For example, let’s say you decide to hire a local contractor for your roof replacement. Their install job is spotless, leaving you with a pristine roof, or so you thought.

After five years, the shingles begin to warp and crack, even without the help of severe weather. The batch of shingles installed on your roof was defective, and it should not be your responsibility to pay for it. The same goes for the roofing contractor who installed the shingles.

It’s up to the manufacturer to solve the issue out of their pocket. This is important to look for when researching warranties since you won’t know if the shingles are defective years down the road.

You may also see if you qualify for an enhanced warranty. In order to qualify for an enhanced warranty, all your roofing components must come from the same manufacturer to form a complete roofing system. Once installed, you can register your roof through the manufacturer and get an enhanced warranty.

While a normal warranty only covers shingles, the enhanced warranty will cover all your roofing materials. Registering for an enhanced warranty will give you a 50-year non-prorated enhanced warranty.

What Do Warranties NOT Cover?

Even if you have an extended warranty from your contractor, there may be things that are still not covered by the warranty. It may not cover roof damage from heavy snowfall unless you request it specifically.

It is also possible to void a warranty. If you do not maintain your roof properly and something ends up damaged, a warranty might not cover that. Make sure you continue to use the same contractor for all your roofing needs to keep everything streamlined.

Protect Your Warranties

There are a few ways to protect yourself and your roof from voiding your warranty. The first is to get regular inspections on your roof so you can spot any minor issues and get them repaired. It will allow you to stay ahead of any problems.

Secondly, always make sure to register your warranty. You must submit it to the manufacturer in order to stay covered.

Third, read the fine print on everything. There may be some hidden language that prevents you from being covered.
