Meet the Team of Trinity Exteriors

The winter months here in the Twin Cities area are always one for the books. The temperature dips well below freezing and stays there for quite some time.

During the harsh weather, your home exterior may be put to the test. If there are weaknesses found on your home’s exterior, it may make your home feel uncomfortable on the inside.

Let’s take a look at the three things that make your home uncomfortable and how to fix them.

1. Roof Damage

Believe it or not, a damaged roof can cause the comfort inside of your house to suffer. Heat rises, and as your heating system warms up your house, the warm air will rise to the very top of your home.

If your attic isn’t properly insulated or your roof is damaged, you will lose a significant amount of heat, making your home less cozy. Before the cold weather hits, you may want to install additional layers of insulation in your attic or conduct roof repair and replacement as needed.

2. Damaged Siding

Your home’s siding also plays an important role in keeping your home comfortable during the winter months. When you have missing or damaged siding, the outdoor elements can cause fast degradation of your interior structure, as well as heat loss.

If part of your siding is exposed during the winter or when it’s raining, it is increasingly susceptible to water damage, followed by mold and mildew growth. This can lead to a dip in the air quality in your home, making breathing uncomfortable and laborious for some.

In addition, the heat loss as a result of missing or damaged siding will be readily noticed. Replacing or repairing your siding as needed will benefit your interior structure and peace of mind, respectively!

3. Outdated Windows

When we think about the comfort of home, we rarely consider the role windows play in it. After all, windows are just giant holes in our house with a pane or two of glass separating the outside world and the comfort of your home!

When windows pass their peak or fail to keep the cold air out, it may be time to replace them. Choosing between fiberglass or energy-efficient windows can help you lower the cost of your energy bill while keeping your home cozy all winter long!

4. Poor Insulation

If you have old or damaged insulation in your attic, you may be losing a lot of your cold or warm air from your HVAC system. Insulation has a lot to do with your roof’s ventilation system, and when not working properly, your home will not feel as comfortable despite the efforts of your heating or cooling.

Poor insulation can also cause ice dams in the winter, which are dangerous and damaging to your roof. If you notice ice dams or high energy bills, it might be time to replace your attic insulation.

5. Broken or Clogged Gutters

Gutters are important. They keep water from getting into your home when it rains or snows. But so often, gutters are overlooked, and that can cause many problems.

For example, suppose water gets backed up in your gutters. In that case, the water can leak into your roof, saturate your insulation, and cause your home to become less energy efficient and less comfortable. Plus, leaks are extremely damaging and can cause weakened structural integrity and mold.
